Ultra Cap Module

The Spica Technology Ultracap backup module is specially designed for use in the harsh environment found inside a wind turbine pitch system.

The backup power is based on Ultracapacitor technology from Maxwell. The major advantage is that the backup module can deliver full power in a wide temperature range, including very low temperatures. Another benefit is the very long service life compared to traditional batteries. Depending on the average working temperature, Ultracapacitors need only be charged once or in best case never, in the entire lifespan of the wind turbine (20 years). Another advantage is the fast charging time. If the system is fully discharged (0V), Ultracapacitors can be charged in 5-10 minutes. The Ultracap backup module is dimensioned for the Spica electrical pitch system and is able to run the motor at full nominal load for approx. 20 seconds. After a stop sequence discharge, it will take approx 3 minutes to recharge the ultracapacitors to full capacity. Charge times are based on constant current charging using approx. 4 A.
